I have a 10 gallon polarware pot that does not have a spigot or thermometer. I'm currently mashing with a 10 gallon round cooler and I'm wondering if I would be better off with a pot that I can mash in.
So, should I look to have the polarware pot modified (anyone know someone local in Austin to weld it?) or should I try and sell it and get a pot with these features already installed from the "factory"? |

| You can drill a hole and use weldless fittings if you can't find a welder to do it for you. Good luck. |

I have a weldless spigot in my boil keggle. It works PERFECTLY! I mash in a cooler that is rectangular in shape, and use a wort-hog and again it works perfectly! I get about a 80% or BETTER efficiency EVERY TIME! Even with big beers! I batch sparge too... So, why would you want to change anyway? I dont understand your delema...
As far as a thermometer, I dont see a need for one... As long as you have a good one that is long enough, why would you need a thermometer fitted into your equipment.
I have been brewing for years and make EXCELLENT brews without those extras and cant see it being anything more than something else to get in the way... Just my opinion of course! _________________ I like beer |

I have both a weldless ball valve and a thermometer in both my brew kettle and my HLT, and would never think about mashing in a pot, nor have I ever doubted my decision to install the weldless fittings |

I'm not positive on this but have you asked the folks over at AHS?
They sell pots they drill and add spigots and therms.
They may only do it as a courtesy to those who bought their pot but I imagine they wouldn't turn down some extra $$ and if you brought it with you they might even be able to do it as you wait? I'd call first and save you some gas, of course. _________________ TexasStu |

| I'd just use the pot for a boil kettle. Unless you are going to build a HERMS or RIMS system, you won't see any benefit from just mashing in a pot over the cooler. You also greatly increase the risk of scorching the wort unless you have a recirculation system in place. If you want to build a system, keep the pot for a boil kettle, find some legal kegs to make a mash tun and HLT and go from there. |
