Generally I get unsatisfactory results from clarifying agents that I've used- Isinglass and Irish moss. I follow the directions, but my batch isn't very clear. Is gelatin finings or Whirlfloc tablets better?
Any thoughts, advice? |

It really depends on what type of brew you are doing. Some brews are not ment to be clear. If you are brewing a wheat beer it should be a little coudy. I have two brews in secondary right now. One is a blond ale and the other is a Dunkelweizen. The blond is clear, and the Dunkelweizen is very cloudy. This is just the nature of the brew. _________________ Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. |

True, and I understand that about wheat beers, etc., but I get mixed results with ales and pilsners. Even when adding clarifiers during secondary fermentation, per instructions, when it comes time to keg, it's about 50% clear.
I'm very strict about sanitation and follow recipes precisely, and haven't had a bad tasting batch yet, but I'm still trying to get that perfectly clear pilsner.
Any thoughts? Thank you! |

I just tried chitosan-based finings on an American Ale kit. It didn't do anything except form a powdery scum on the surface after a week. ...hope it hasn't gotten moldy as a result of that "vigorous stir" that I gave it.
After lagering in a keg for three weeks, it's still cloudy from yeast and there is a cloying sweet aftertaste. Maybe I jumped the gun and kegged too early- - gravity is 1.02 vs. target 1.005.
Am I in trouble, or can I wait for another couple of months and come out okay? (Positive outlook: good excuse to buy another corny-keg.) Next time I'm going back to Irish moss. |
